Limited Space Drills

I put these drills together for my lower level coaches and thought I would share them on here. All of them are designed to be done with limited gym space. One of the hardest things for a coach can be getting skill work done when you have half the gym or less. Hopefully you find some ideas here that might help you this year. Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Boisvert Passing

This is a great drill that I found last year from Zac Boisvert's twitter feed. This drill worked really well for us because of the focus on footwork and the need to make good passes for the group to have success. 1 Pass that isn't perfect tends to throw the group off much like half court offense.

4 Man Iso

Another play for the 7 Seconds or less offense. Can be ran out of a dead ball or as a regular play to Iso a big that can play on perimeter. More and more teams are going to 4 perimeter players and creating huge matchup issues for coaches that use 2 post players.

Practice Improvement Notes

Here are some notes that I personally wrote out for my assistants at the Jr. Hi level and for my high school assistants. Nothing earth shattering here but some key points on basics of practice ideas that I have and expect them to have.

Tips to Improving Practice

I am a very big believer in practice and making yourself and your team better with each practice. You have to treat every practice as a way to make your team better. As a coach you have to put in the time to prepare each practice to make your players better and your team better.

1. Improve yourself as a coach everyday. If you aren’t improving how can you expect your players too? Find what you can get better at it, study it, and improve it. Don’t be afraid to try new things.
2. Skill development everyday
a. Jr Basketball thru varsity needs to have a focus in this area
3. Pace of practice- Slow practices lead to boredom and bored kids don’t learn or improve
4. Fundamentals everyday- Take pride in improving your kids in the basics
a. Pivot work
b. Post feeds
c. Weak hand dribbling
d. Passing
5. Don’t worry so much about the offense
a. When you look at the percentages very few baskets come from running set offense so make sure you don’t spend 80% of your time working on something that only creates 15% of your points
6. Lines- I can’t stand going to a practice in any sport and 90% of the team is standing watching.
a. Utilize your gym
b. Adapt your drills to get guys more touches
c. Are you better off breaking your guys up at 4 baskets and losing some control or having 5 guys working and 10 guys watching?
7. Conditioning
a. You have to be in shape but this doesn’t mean you have to run the most sprints
b. If your running have a ball in your hands a majority of the time
c. We run sprints when I’m mad or I want to test my guys and see how hard they will work for me
8. Practice the way you play- We play fast and aggressive at every level
a. Add transitions to your drills if you want to be good at it—Defense gets a stop they are going the other way
9. Repetition for the good stuff
a. Instead of doing it until they get it right focus on how many times in a row you can do it right. Reps of correct form is the only way to get better
10. Teach on the go
a. Don’t stop drills too often unless you really feel you need too

Ball Handling
1. Weak hand focus- everyday your kids need to spend 5-10 mins on their weak hand. – Before they get a drink everyone gets a ball and dribbles as hard as they can with their weak hand 100 times.
2. Retreat dribble- Tired of watching people go farther to their right or crossing over every time they are pressured. Teach them to do a retreat dribble with 2 dribbles to create space and they now have room.
3. Talk with each player about what they need to do better when handling the ball and what their strengths are
4. The dribble has taken over basketball with the drive and kick offense but you have to get your guys to attack vertically and work downhill to the rim. Too many dribbles are going sideways.

Pivot
1. Watch how much your guys improve if you do at least 1 pivot drill per day
2. Put 30 secs on the clock and have player pivot with a defender on them

Passing
1. Favorite passing drill of all time is man in the middle. Two offensive players and 1 defender and you have to pivot and pass.
2. Pass fake is a fading skill and it shows in how hard it is to get an open shot
3. Fake low pass hi and vise versa

Alan Stein

Found this video online today and thought I would share it. Alan Stein has tons of free stuff that he has shared. Watching the video it really reminded me how differently you have to train for basketball than any other sport. Make sure you check out some of his other videos on youtube as well.

Late Game Situations

Here are some good notes and items to look over before starting the season. Always a good time to look at what we are doing at the end of games or quarters.

7 Seconds Or Less

We ran this quite a bit last year as an entry into our dribble drive offense. Very simple play that can flow into 3 or 4 out offense. Didn't score a lot of the ball screen but helped open up court for penetration. Several College teams are running something similar to this but keeping 1 player as a ball screener throughout the play.

7 Seconds Or Less

ECU Fast Break

I have already shared several drills from ECU's Womens Basketball program. I was lucky enough to listen to Heather Macy at the Nike Dells Clinic this past spring and have been excited to add this drill that I watched her share. We love to fast break and feel that you have to practice that style everyday to be affective at it. I think we can add this drill to our fast break routine to get even more results and to change up practice.

Butler 131

3rd Play In 7 Seconds or Less
Easy to run quick hitter to get ball into post. Found this one looking through some Brad Stevens notes. He has a ton of great quick hitters and has a lot of free stuff available online. If you are looking for any of his notes let me know and I will send them to you. bmoore@plano88.org

Give and Go

2nd Play of 7 Seconds or less series. We ran this play several times this summer and I had very little confidence that it would work. Scored 3 baskets off it going right back to the wing.

7 Seconds Or less

One thing I have been studying this year is the 7 seconds or less offense. Not only did I read dozens of articles and publications on the this style of play, but looked at all of my plays that would fit this style of offense. I'm going to start posting this style of play but would also love to see anything you have to share. Overall I'm looking for plays that are easy to run and develop very quickly. The goal of the offense is a good shot within 7 seconds so nothing too complicated.

GK 45
- Very easy to run play that gets quick looks without a problem

Defensive Scramble Drill

Here is a drill that we have done in practice to work on getting a stop even when the man on the ball has been beat. Forces players to help early and simulates game situations and rotations that are key to any defense.

I've posted a lot of shell drills on here in the past and one thing I have tried to add after reading a lot of College coaching notes is early help on the drive. In today's game more and more teams are putting the ball on the ground and driving to the basket. One thing we have added to our shells drills is a simple thing we call burn. While players are passing the ball around in your typical shell drill a coach yells burn and offensive player drives hard while his defender has to touch nearest sideline or baseline before getting back into the play.

Ball Screen Action For Post

Good action to add post entry to your ball screen offense. Anyone that runs a lot of ball screens knows how hard it can be to go against a switching defense. Here is a good look to attack teams that will switch ball screens.

Lots of options out of this look and easy to change to fit your offense

Bruce Weber Defensive Drills

Some great stuff as always from Coach Weber in here.

ECU Gut Check

Good drill I picked up at the Nike Clinic this spring. We are looking at using this as a drill to build up some enthusiasm and have some fun at the end of a practice this year.

A Sets- 20 Plays

This is a playbook I have been working on for a while after watching so many NBA teams starting in this set during the 2011 Playoffs. Most of the plays are very easy to run and give the defense a different look than a traditional 3-2 set up.

Ball Screens

8 Ways to use the On Ball Screen

1. Turn the corner (no hedge by defender) -- Guard drives low and tight.
2. Hesitate and go (soft hedge) – At level of screen, hesitate, eyes on rim. Key to make the hedge man relax.
3. Split the hedge—The most under-utilized part of offensive ball screening. After clearing the screen low and tight, explode on the split. Dribble below the knees.
4. Fake the split then inside/out dribble to the paint.
5. Reject the screen (Guards man completely blocks the path of the driver, screener’s defender is at block area zoning up.
6. Shooting behind—The on ball defender goes behind the screen. Shot must come directly behind the screen.
7. Re-screen – when screener’s defender shows big, flat hedge. Drive over the screen, then crossover and use the screen again toward the baseline. Screener turns to the inside on second screen getting you closer to the basket.
8. Early slip—Guard’s defender jumps low (toward baseline), driver splits between his man and the screen. Counter is to fake the split.

4 Hi Jet

1 on 2

For our summer work we are doing a lot of small group work with 1 on 1 or 3 on 3 stuff. Here is a drill that I have found and started using when we have 3 guys at a basket.

Player with the ball has to beat the on ball defender and try to score against help rotating from the middle. It's a nice drill and gives our players a look that we don't work on a lot during the regular season.

We also have been using our new scoring system with this drill
Any attempted layup = 2
Any other shot is worth regular points when made.
So if they make a layup it's actually worth 4 points.

We went to this scoring system to really focus our kids on getting to the rim. One thing that I have noticed is that kids all of a sudden know what a layup is and what is a weak floater or fade away finish. It's been a great scoring system for us this summer and thought I would share it with you guys.

4 on 4 Shell Drill

With this drill we use our basic 4 on 4 shell look. We are anticipating a lot of teams at the high school level moving towards ball screens for quick hitters or continuity offenses where they are setting multiple ball screens. This drill allows us to work on defending them very quickly in practice.

Setting and defending screens

We get to start basketball camp next week and I can't wait to get back to coaching some basketball. One thing that we are going to focus on this summer is setting and defending screens. I was looking through some potential drills and found this one. I think we are going to use this because of how easy it is and it being a 3 on 3 drill. I have read tons of info on coaches focusing on 3 on 3 to teach the game of basketball.

10,000 Shot Club

Every year we are trying to find new things to build up interest in basketball at our school. I searched around message boards and web sites for ideas and finally settled on a 10,000 shot club. We are giving out a free T- Shirt to anyone that completes the 10,000 shots between the end of last season and next fall. Decided on doing grades 4-12 and hope we have to spend a whole bunch of money on T- Shirts. If you have any questions or comments please contact me. bmoore@plano88.org

East Carolina Fast Break Drill

Heather Macy who is the Head Girls Coach at East Carolina spoke at the Nike Clinic in the Wisconsin Dells that I went to this weekend. I thought she was one of the best presenters at the clinic and loved this drill. Her teams play fast and score a lot of points and I think this drill is a great example of why.

Link
http://www.box.net/shared/f12tnzmudu

Just about every coach at the clinic mentioned how important the fast break was no matter what type of team they have or what type of offense they run. Coach after coach continued to mention the need to score points and get looks before the defense can get set.

Partner Skill Work

As a coaching staff we are always looking for ways to improve our practices and our players skill work. During the past season we stole some ideas and built upon them from the Xavier newsletter which is always a great resource. We added this drill with about 3 weeks left to go in our season because our players were needed a change to keep that competitive start to practice. We like to shoot and get moving with basketball skill work to start practice even before we stretch.

http://www.box.net/shared/dl1nx0z9lu

Some previous drills that I have posted that we like to use for shooting at the beginning of practice.

Improving Your Shell Drill

The Shell Drill is something that most coaches work on everyday in practice. I've read through hundreds of college coaches philosophies on defense and each one does their shell drill in a different way. Here are some basic ideas out of the 4 hi UCLA set that might help improve your defense next season.

VCU Rams Ball Screens

Drill Book

Great drill book from Matt Driscoll from the University of North Florida Coaches Clinic

Thought I would pass this along. This has been on several different web sites that provide clinic notes. Some really good stuff in here for all levels of basketball.

http://www.box.net/shared/3fgqpesy7r

Also thought I would show an entry the Bulls ran Vs. the Pacers to get Korver open early in the shot clock. Korver will start anywhere on the floor and use this basic set to run his man off the posts. Jay Wright runs a lot of sets similar to this to get his best player isolated with the ball or to run off screens.

Izzo Defensive Break Down Drills

Very basic drills from Coach Izzo.

None of the drills are anything really new, but they have a good focus on the basics. All of these are simple drills that work on footwork and closing out.

These drills caught my attention when I was looking for some drills to combine live play and closeouts. I felt like too many times we were working on team defense, 4 on 4 shell, or live defense. I would like to add in a couple of these 2 on 2 drills and build from there.

50 Ball Screen Quick Hitters Playbook

This is something that I have been working on since the end of our season. This playbook consists of plays that I have used as well as opponents plays and a lot of looks I have picked up on Watching NBA and College games.

Watching the NCAA tournament for the past couple of weeks it's obvious how big the ball screen has become in the college game. Even teams like Wisconsin and Illinois are using them frequently. One thing that I keep hearing from commentators is giving the guard the option to work down hill off the screen. Giving him space and hitting the screen with speed to get to the rim.

Hopefully you can find a couple of plays or ideas from this playbook that you can use next season.

Notes From Mike Dunlap

If your players aren’t working hard enough, make them play defense 2 on 4. Limit the offense to no dribbling, and four passes before they try to score. Also make them reverse the ball twice.
This would be an overload principle that will make them work harder. Can go 3 on 4 as well.

Drilling for Drill sake is BS! Make it a competition.

5 on 3 Drill: 5 black go 3 on 2, then all five go the other way and play 5 on 3.
Keep Score; black & white team head to head, make a player from the winning team make a free throw to win the drill.

Looking Through Notes

Mario De Sisti Notes Posted on Better X's and O's basketball blog

I have been looking through a lot of notes today and this one really stood out.

The game continues to evolve. To be current coaches must constantly up date how the game is taught. We run many “old” offenses and teach “old” offensive concepts. Many pre-dated the shot clock, 3 point line and the new physical defense. We need to create problems for recovery by the defense. Spacing and movement are key. Making use of the contact by defense. We need to make use of penetration, movement off penetration, continuous picks or screens into picks. The chest pass is an “old” pass yet is the first pass many still teach. It is most used in drills where no defense is prevalent. Almost impossible to use in today’s game.

First as a coach it drives me nuts when we turn the ball over throwing a chest pass that had no chance at all to get to it's target. So his last comment really made me remember some horrid passes that I witnessed this year.

He also made me look at how basketball has changed, and there have been a lot of major changes in offenses just in the past 5 years. Drive and kick has been a huge part of the game since help side defense became something that everyone did. Then the dribble drive craze came in and made some of these concepts more organized. In the past 3 seasons I have watched almost every team in NCAA run ball screen after ball screen. I'm looking forward to watching some more college basketball now that our season is over and trying to pick up on some of the new things or new concepts coaches are changing the game with.

Handoff's to Isolate Key Players

Different concept that I have seen more teams using this year to get different looks off the drive. If you are a dribble hand off team you know how hard teams work to keep you from beating them with this action. One thing I have always had success with is passing to the player and cutting behind them. The cut has to be a hard scoring cut to make it work. Works even better at the center of the court which is why I like this look.

Effective Skill Development

If you have read any of my previous posts you realize that I am a big Kevin Eastman fan. In my opinion he is the best skills coach out there and gives a lot of great information that is easy for coaches at any level to follow. Now that our season is over I'm getting off season skill work ready for players and started looking through his notes and found this.

Most of these are pretty obvious but might be even more important during the off season for players to really get better.

Six components to effective skill development
• Practice at a rate faster than or equal to a game
• Understand that improvement is a process
o Need effective practice and must be in condition
• Eliminate work-out killers: fatigue & boredom
• Have a written work-out plan
• Work on 3 areas everyday: conditioning, dribbling, shooting
• Theory of “2”
o Coach can show any skill in 2 minutes
o 2 weeks before player is comfortable with the skill (working every day)
o 2 months before player is ready to use skill in competition (working every day)

Rebounding To Transition Drills

Taking advantage of a couple of snow days to finally get back to the blog.

This has been a very interesting year for us and thought I would share some of the drills we have spent a lot of time on. These drills work on 2 things rebounding and transition offense. We have been playing 4 or 5 guards at most times this season so our rebounding has always been weak but we have really made up for it with scoring a lot of quick baskets. These drills have really helped our level of success this year. Off a make or miss we want to try to beat the defense back down the court.
