Partner Skill Work

As a coaching staff we are always looking for ways to improve our practices and our players skill work. During the past season we stole some ideas and built upon them from the Xavier newsletter which is always a great resource. We added this drill with about 3 weeks left to go in our season because our players were needed a change to keep that competitive start to practice. We like to shoot and get moving with basketball skill work to start practice even before we stretch.

Some previous drills that I have posted that we like to use for shooting at the beginning of practice.

Improving Your Shell Drill

The Shell Drill is something that most coaches work on everyday in practice. I've read through hundreds of college coaches philosophies on defense and each one does their shell drill in a different way. Here are some basic ideas out of the 4 hi UCLA set that might help improve your defense next season.

VCU Rams Ball Screens

Drill Book

Great drill book from Matt Driscoll from the University of North Florida Coaches Clinic

Thought I would pass this along. This has been on several different web sites that provide clinic notes. Some really good stuff in here for all levels of basketball.

Also thought I would show an entry the Bulls ran Vs. the Pacers to get Korver open early in the shot clock. Korver will start anywhere on the floor and use this basic set to run his man off the posts. Jay Wright runs a lot of sets similar to this to get his best player isolated with the ball or to run off screens.

OKC Thunder Quick Hitter

Play that the Thunder ran tonight in the Playoffs

Has a lot of options to isolate your best ball handler on the wing.
Could easily change the way the ball gets to the wing and how you go into the set to start the play.

I have at least a dozen plays out of this type of double hi post so just email me if you want more quick hitters.

Izzo Defensive Break Down Drills

Very basic drills from Coach Izzo.

None of the drills are anything really new, but they have a good focus on the basics. All of these are simple drills that work on footwork and closing out.

These drills caught my attention when I was looking for some drills to combine live play and closeouts. I felt like too many times we were working on team defense, 4 on 4 shell, or live defense. I would like to add in a couple of these 2 on 2 drills and build from there.
